How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the points you earned.
  2. Enter the total points possible.
  3. The result shows the percentage and the letter grade on the scale below.

The formula

Percentage = (Points earned ÷ Points possible) × 100
Scale
A ≥ 93, A− ≥ 90, B+ ≥ 87, B ≥ 83, B− ≥ 80, C+ ≥ 77, C ≥ 73, C− ≥ 70, D+ ≥ 67, D ≥ 63, D− ≥ 60, F < 60

How it works

The score is a simple percentage. The letter grade then maps that percentage onto the common US plus/minus scale shown in the formula box.

Grading scales are set by each school or instructor — treat the letter as a common-convention guide, not a guarantee.

Worked example

You earned 83 points out of 95 on a midterm.

  1. 183 ÷ 95 ≈ 0.8737
  2. 20.8737 × 100 ≈ 87.37

87.37%, which maps to a B+ on the scale used here.
