The formula

Final price = Price × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)
Price
Original (pre-discount) price
Discount%
The advertised percentage off

How it works

A 25% discount means you pay 75% of the original: 89.99 × 0.75 = 67.49.

Stacked discounts multiply rather than add: 20% off then 10% off is ×0.8 ×0.9 = ×0.72, a 28% total discount — not 30%.

Worked example

A $89.99 jacket is 25% off.

  1. 1Savings = 89.99 × 0.25 = 22.50
  2. 2Final = 89.99 − 22.50

You pay $67.49 and save $22.50.

Frequently asked questions

Is 20% off then 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. Sequential discounts multiply: 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72, so you pay 72% — a 28% discount.

How do I find the original price from the sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount/100). A $60 item after 25% off originally cost 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.
