How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the pre-tip bill amount.
  2. Choose the tip percentage.
  3. Enter how many people are splitting, and calculate.

The formula

Tip = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100) Total = Bill + Tip Per person = Total ÷ People
Bill
The check amount before tip
Tip %
Your chosen gratuity rate

How it works

The tip is a straight percentage of the bill. 18% of $86.40 is 86.40 × 0.18 = $15.55.

Splitting divides the tip-inclusive total evenly; rounding to cents happens only at display time, so the per-person figure is exact.

Worked example

An $86.40 dinner check, 18% tip, split 3 ways.

  1. 1Tip = 86.40 × 0.18 = 15.55
  2. 2Total = 86.40 + 15.55 = 101.95
  3. 3101.95 ÷ 3 ≈ 33.98

Tip $15.55, total $101.95, about $33.98 per person.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Customs differ; many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Enter whichever base you prefer — the math is the same.

How do I round the total to a whole number?

Adjust the percentage until the total lands where you want — each 1% on a $50 bill is $0.50.
